ANTEDILUVIAN MEMORIES SERIES
HOECK VAN HOLLAND
As the population of the Earth expands, we are constantly reminded of our fragile existence here. As societies expand their habitats, the forces of nature are not always given proper consideration. When a river overflows its banks, it is of little concern to us if no one lives there or has no possessions in its way. A flood becomes historic and catastrophic when it affects people's lives, and that is usually because they have done something to put themselves in the path of the water. By combining the visual image of the hourglass containing water and soil and an historical narrative, I seek to raise our awareness of our place in the ecosystem of this planet.
ANTEDILUVIAN MEMORIES presently consists of seventeen of these hourglass ”geodetic markers”. To create these pieces I traveled to the site to personally collect soil and water to house in my hourglasses (except for Atlanta and Indonesea, where I collaborated with other artists).
